Potatoes
Average marketplace US potato prices declined in November 2024, down 8.0% YOY to $0.46/lb. US potato production for 2025 is projected at roughly 421 million cwt, essentially flat with 2024 and indicative of a stable supply outlook. In the Pacific Northwest, reduced acreage, down about 15,000 acres, did not weaken output due to strong yields. Idaho is positioned for meaningful year-over-year gains, supported by yield increases nearing 20 cwt per acre. Washington’s 10% acreage cut is expected to translate into an 8% production decline, while Oregon anticipates only a slight downturn.
Demand signals are shifting. The Michigan Potato Industry Commission expects softer US demand for Canadian table potatoes as domestic supplies remain ample. Chip markets are steady, with supply and demand balanced. Michigan growers report average early chip yields but weaker solids as they move into storage. Early-September cool weather aided harvest, while recent warmth has heightened moisture needs to prevent storage issues such as pressure bruising.

Canada’s production landscape is increasingly regional. Eastern provinces—PEI, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario—experienced late-season dryness that reduced yields, while the Prairies and British Columbia saw more favorable outcomes. Despite western strength, table potato production in the four major eastern provinces is expected to fall by about 9% or more. In the US, table potato shipments for the week ending September 13 declined 15% year over year to 1.594 million cwt, reflecting softer export demand.

At a broader level, US policy continues to shape the global potato and horticultural supply chain. Federal support, ranging from soft credit and crop insurance to energy programs and marketing assistance, provides structural advantages for domestic growers. Trade relationships under USMCA remain central, with agricultural diplomacy continuing to influence cross-border flows with Canada and Mexico.
Sweet Potatoes
US sweet potato prices rose by an average of 4.0% YOY in November 2024 to $0.52/Ib, attributed to carryover demand from 2024.
North Carolina, which produces roughly 60% of the US sweet potato crop, is reporting yields that are outperforming season expectations. Despite limited rainfall toward the end of the growing season, fields have delivered strong volumes, and overall production appears well-positioned to maintain a consistent, year-round supply. Quality is also reported to be solid across most growing regions, reinforcing confidence in the state’s marketable output.
This year’s performance stands in clear contrast to last season, when adverse weather conditions reduced both acreage and yields, prompting concerns about whether supplies would hold through the full marketing year. The improved growing environment in 2025 has helped stabilize the supply outlook and eased industry pressures that were present a year ago. Demand is currently moving at typical seasonal levels, with indications that it may be trending slightly above average as buyers respond to improved availability and quality.

Carrot & Turnip
The price of US carrots fell by 18.9% YOY in November 2024 to $0.47/lb, attributed to ample supply within the market. Carrot market conditions remain steady, supported by solid production levels and consistent quality across key growing regions. Prices are holding firm—ranging from stable to slightly higher, driven by steady demand and minimal production disruptions. Growers continue to adopt precision agriculture and machine-learning tools to boost yields, improve water efficiency, and manage input costs, reinforcing long-term sustainability and climate resilience.
California continues to dominate US carrot production, supplying roughly 85% of the market. Seasonal buying patterns are also influencing demand, as carrots play a central role in holiday cooking and entertainment. From baby carrots used in a wide range of ways, to whole carrots used in roasts, soups, stocks, and side dishes, December consumption typically remains elevated due to diverse usage across holiday meals and gatherings.

The Expana price of US turnip tops fell by 6.2% YOY from 1.45/lb to $1.36/lb in November 2024. In 2025, demand for certain field vegetables, including turnips, has declined. Market interest for these crops is softer compared with previous years, reflecting shifting consumer preferences and seasonal buying patterns.
