Europe Valentine’s Day Chocolate Index shows robust growth as cocoa prices soar

As Valentine's Day 2025 approaches, Expana has analyzed the essential commodities that drive the price of chocolate, the main confectionary consumed in Europe during this period. Expana's chocolate index comprises a price blend of cocoa beans, sugar, and skimmed milk powder (SMP). While not part of the price blend, insights on the Expana Benchmark Prices (EBPs) for vanilla and European strawberry prices are also included in this commentary. Strawberries are also one of the most consumed fruits during the Valentine’s Day period. The use of vanilla in the preparation of cakes and chocolates is also widespread.

Expana’s Europe Valentine’s Day Chocolate Index

Expana’s Europe Valentine's Day Chocolate Index increased by 101.3% year-on-year (y-o-y) and 1.7% month-on-month (m-o-m) to €5,618/mt in January 2025, driven by a substantial increase in cocoa prices, which far outweighed lower sugar prices.
