UK Vegan (Plant-Based) Christmas Dinner Index

The Vegan (plant-based) Index, which includes pea protein isolate, potatoes, parsnips, carrots, maize starch, and carrageenan, increased in November 2025. Pea Protein Isolate

The EBP for pea protein isolate EXW EU remained stable at €4.10/kg (£3.59/kg) in November 2025, representing an increase of 0.5% Y-O-Y. In Europe, market sentiment is turning bullish, as demand is increasing and the European Commission (EC) has launched an anti-dumping investigation into Chinese pea protein imports. This is causing some suppliers to increase offers as negotiations pick up towards the end of the year. European sources state that the EU imported roughly 30,000-40,000 metric tons of pea protein from China in 2024.

According to market sources, if anti-dumping tariffs are implemented, volumes will be replaced with pea protein isolate and concentrate of EU origin, which should be supportive for prices. Suppliers said that some customers in the Netherlands are using a lot of pea protein from China, as the prices are too compelling. According to a producer, the price differential is around €3.00-4.00/kg. The EC has the objective to finalize the anti-dumping investigation by February 2026. The duties may be implemented retroactively for a period of three months. The tariff may be in the range of €2.00-3.00/kg, according to market feedback.

Maize Starch

The maize starch price averaged €0.48/kg (£0.42/kg) in November 2025, up by 2.55% Y-O-Y. Market sources stated that forecasts for EU-27 corn production are higher M-O-M but remain close to the very low levels of the 2022/2023 season. They added that harvests have been a lot weaker in eastern producing countries, but western producers such as France and Germany have been much stronger. According to FranceAgriMer, 75% of France’s corn area had been harvested, above the five-year average of 63%, with 60% of the crop being rated good/excellent. Market participants stated that weather conditions have been largely supportive of the harvest, despite large concerns throughout a dry summer. Market players expect the EU to produce up to 56.5 million mt of corn in the 2025/2026 season.

Carrageenan

The price of food-grade carrageenan fell by 7.69% Y-O-Y in November 2025 to CNY 36/kg (£3.84/kg) due to a decline in consumption. Several factors contributed to declining demand, including health concerns, product reformulations that eliminated carrageenan, and increased competition from alternative ingredients such as guar gum.
